Developing: Reports of Falling Debris in Camas

Status: Verified

What we’re hearing

Residents have contacted Camas News describing rock-like debris striking or appearing near residential properties. We are collecting photos, exact locations, and timestamps.

What we know

  • A protected eyewitness reported that a large boulder struck their home at approximately 2:30 PM today. They described visible roof damage and house shaking. Camas News has requested and is reviewing photo evidence with original EXIF data to corroborate the claim.
  • We have received at least one additional tip from residents in the same time frame describing unusual falling debris. These accounts are being verified for accuracy and independence.
  • Camas News has formally requested comment and incident/dispatch logs from local authorities. As of publication, no official statement has been received.
  • We are actively seeking corroboration through timestamped photos, video, and public records. All updates will be timestamped in the “Timeline of updates” section below.

What we do not know yet

  • The origin of the debris (natural, construction transport, illegal dumping, other).
  • Whether separate reports are related to a single cause.

Eyewitness report & allegations from sources

Reporter’s note: The items below are based on a protected eyewitness account and an anonymous source who identifies as connected to local law enforcement. These claims are currently unverified by Camas News. We are publishing them so the public can see the allegations and so that authorities may respond; we will update this page with corroborating evidence or official responses.

Protected eyewitness account

Claim: A protected witness who asked to withhold their name told Camas News that a large boulder struck their home at approximately 2:30 PM today. The witness provided a brief account to our reporter and said the object caused visible damage to the roof and exterior. The witness has offered to provide photos and original files for verification; Camas News is attempting to obtain and verify EXIF/timestamp metadata.

“A huge rock came down out of nowhere and hit my house at about 2:30. I could hear it hit the roof and the whole house shook. I’m shaken up and worried someone could have been hurt.” — protected eyewitness (requested anonymity)

Anonymous law-enforcement source

Claim: An anonymous person who identified themselves to our reporter as working within Camas law enforcement told Camas News that internal communications show an effort to "downplay" or "avoid publicizing" a likely source of the falling debris. Because this source spoke on background/anonimity, we are publishing the claim with the understanding that we have not yet independently corroborated internal documents or on-the-record confirmation.

We have reached out to the Camas Police Department and other relevant agencies for on-the-record confirmation and requested any incident or dispatch logs that correspond to today’s reports. We will publish official responses verbatim when received.

How you can help

  • If you were an eyewitness and have photos or video, please send originals (not screenshots) with EXIF metadata to tips@camasnews.org.
  • If you have a document (incident report, email, or log) that you’re permitted to share, please contact us; we can accept encrypted submissions.
Safety note: If you encounter suspected falling debris, avoid the area, document from a safe distance, and if there is an immediate hazard call 911. For non-emergencies use your local non-emergency line.

Official statements & requests for comment

  • We have reached out to relevant agencies and will publish responses here verbatim once received.

Working theories (clearly labeled)

These are hypotheses under review. We will update, confirm, or discard as evidence warrants.

  • Material falling from transport vehicles (gravel/rock loads) on nearby routes.
  • Hillside erosion or slope failure following weather or construction activity.
  • Meteorite or bolide fragmentation (rare; requires expert analysis).
  • Deliberate human action (illegal dumping or vandalism).
